What kind of technique do you use when you brush your teeth? According to the American Dental Association,

… for the most thorough cleaning, start with your toothbrush at a 45-degree angle to your gums and brush gently back and forth in tooth-wide strokes. To scrub the inside of your front teeth, hold your toothbrush vertically and make up-and-down strokes. Make sure to get all surfaces of each tooth, and brush your tongue, too!

October National Dental Hygiene Month

October is National Dental Hygiene Month.  Two things important to good dental hygiene is brushing and flossing. Today we will focus on brushing.

According to American Dental Hygienists’ Association

Research shows that brushing for two minutes is the single most important method for reducing plaque and preventing cavities, gingivitis and other plaque-related diseases. Brushing for two minutes twice a day is crucial to maintaining healthy smiles. Proper brushing technique cleans teeth and gums effectively.

Place a toothbrush (soft, rounded, multi-tufted brush) beside your teeth at a 45-degree angle and gently brush teeth in an elliptical motion. Brush the outside of the teeth, inside the teeth, your tongue, the chewing surfaces and between teeth. Using a back-and-forth motion causes the gum surface to recede, can expose the root surface or make the root surface tender. You also risk wearing down the gum line.

REMEMBER:

Always brush two minutes, two times a day, every day! 2x 2x 1 = Good Dental Hygiene

Are you using the wrong toothbrush?

Does size matter when picking out your tootbrush?  Some people think you can buy just any old toothbrush on the market, but there are many different factors to consider when buying a toothbrush.  If you have to open your mouth too wide to get the toothbrush in then you are using a toothbrush that is too big for you.  Toothbrush sizes vary from compact to full head.  Some people may even prefer the youth or child sized brushes.

What about the bristles? Should you use hard, medium or soft?

According to the Oral-B Website:  “Most dentists recommend soft-bristled toothbrushes, and extra-soft bristled toothbrushes for anyone who has sensitive teeth or gums, or is recovering from a dental procedure. Some people simply prefer soft bristles. But many people who don’t have sensitive teeth or gums prefer firmer bristles because they believe them to be more effective for removing plaque and stains from the teeth, though that is not the case. Effective toothbrushing can be accomplished with soft and extra-soft bristles.”

Are You Brushing your Teeth too Often or Hard?

Are you brushing your teeth too often or too hard?  According to WebMD you could be damaging your teeth if you do either one.

“While brushing your teeth three times a day is ideal, more may not be, says Michael Sesemann, DDS, president of the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry. “More than four toothbrushings a day would begin to seem compulsive,” he says.

Excessive brushing could expose the root of the tooth to irritation, and that could in turn irritate the gums. Brushing vigorously can also erode tooth enamel. The trick is to brush very gently for two to three minutes.”

Softly brushing your teeth at least twice a day is recommended, ”Three times a day is best,” Sesemann says. With too much time between brushings, he says, bacterial plaque will build up, boosting the risk of gum inflammation and other problems.”
