Around this time of the year, we are often asked this question… Is there any good candy? Obviously, most sugar coated candies are bad for your teeth. Especially candies that stick to your teeth when you eat them. That not only includes candies but dried fruits as well which are full of sugars. Also lollipops are bad because they take so long to eat which allows the sugars to stay in your mouth for a longer time.
But are there any sugars that can be considered good for you? Dark Chocolate has many attributes that make it a good choice. Several studies have shown that it may be just as effective than fluoride in fighting tooth decay. Also, compounds in cocoa beans have an antibacterial effect that fights plaque. It also helps your heart too.
Since sugar feeds bacteria in your mouth, sugarless gum and candies are an alternative to sugar laced candies. Also choose a “candy bar” with lots of nuts which serve to break up the stickiness of most bars. When choosing a bar, why not pick a protein bar with more nuts and dark chocolate and less sticky sugars such as caramels.
Be sure to read the labels for the sugar content and avoid anything with high fructose corn syrup.

This post we will be talking about herbs and spices. Although great taste is just one reason to use many sweet smelling herbs, did you know that spices like cinnamon, mint, parsley and thyme are packed with monoterpenes, which are a highly volatile compound that help your breath smell fresh. Also, they contain antibacterial properties that prevent cavity causing Streptococcus mutans bacteria.
Cloves are rich in anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties which help in fighting infections causing tooth decay. Also their anesthetic property is associated with alleviating any tooth pain.
Chewing gums that use essential plant oils have been shown to reduce bacteria that cause bad breath and cavities.
Though the oils were used for flavor, even a small amount reduced bacteria. In fact, the original formula for Listerine was made from a blend of menthol (from mint) and thymol (from thyme).
So next time you find a spring of mint or parsley on your plate, it’s not there just for decoration. Go ahead, chew on it. It’s good for your teeth.

While all candies are not bad for your teeth, eating too much of anything, even good things, is not recommended. Sometimes a cavity may be too deep to be fixed and might require a root canal. Root canal treatment is necessary when the pulp (soft tissue inside your teeth containing blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue) becomes inflamed or diseased. During a root canal Dr. Brogdon removes the diseased pulp. The pulp chamber and root canal(s) of the tooth are then cleaned and sealed. If the infected pulp is not removed, pain and swelling can result, and your tooth may have to be removed.
Causes of an infected pulp could include:
- a deep cavity
- repeated dental procedures
- a cracked or broken toot
- injury to the tooth (even if there’s not a visible crack or chip)
If you continue to care for your teeth and gums your restored tooth could last a lifetime. However, regular checkups are necessary; a tooth without its nerve can still develop cavities or gum disease. Most of the time, a root canal is a relatively simple procedure with little or no discomfort involving one to three visits. Best of all, it can save your tooth and your smile.

You notice a pain in your tooth, especially when you eat something sweet, very cold or very hot. Do you wonder what is happening? You might have a toothache.
Even though tooth decay is often the primary reason behind a toothache, it’s important to visit your dentist and have a complete oral examination to determine the cause.
Some of the causes of a toothache include:
- Gum disease
- Grinding teeth (bruxism)
- Tooth trauma
- An abnormal bite
If the pulp (the inside of the tooth which includes the nerves and tissues) has become irritated, this can cause a toothache.
If you are experiencing this pain and are unable to schedule an emergency appointment with us, there are some things you can do until you are able to see your dentist:
- Rinse with warm salt water
- Gently floss to remove trapped particles between teeth
- Take an ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to relieve pain
- Apply an antiseptic containing benzocaine directly to the irritated tooth and gum to temporarily relieve pain. This can be found at your local drug store.
